What drives the pay
Three things move a heat-pump installer's earnings more than anything else:
- Qualification. A recognised Level 3 ASHP qualification is the baseline employers hire on.
- MCS registration. Being able to certify installations unlocks grant-backed work (the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme), which is where a lot of the paid work is.
- Employed vs self-employed. Day rates for established self-employed installers can sit well above an equivalent salary, but carry the usual risk and admin.
Why demand - and pay - are rising
The UK's net-zero push means hundreds of thousands more heat pumps need installing this decade, and there simply aren't enough trained, MCS-certified installers to do it. When supply is short, qualified people can command more. That scarcity is the whole reason this trade is worth moving into - and why some employers even sponsor overseas installers on Skilled Worker visas.
